The National Urban League (NUL), a civil rights organization working to direct services and policy advocacy to address racial disparities, was founded in 1910 to elevate living standards for Black Americans and other marginalized groups. The organization now has 92 affiliates across the United States that promote economic empowerment through education and job training, housing and community development, workforce development, entrepreneurship, health and quality of life.
Dallas-Fort Worth currently has the largest Black population in the United States without an Urban League affiliate (American Community Survey, 2022). Recognizing the significance of this, DFW YP began work to establish a local affiliate. The DFW YP was given the green light by the national office to develop one – the first time an NUL YP chapter was entrusted to do so. Subsequently, a sponsoring committee and a campaign to establish a DFW Urban League was launched. This committee of civic, nonprofit, higher education and business leaders has focused on long-term sustainability and effective leadership to ensure the new affiliate will help bring about greater economic mobility and a better quality of life for Black and other marginalized residents of North Texas.
Since launching their campaign, the sponsoring committee has gained support from leading funders and corporations dedicated to racial equity in North Texas, including Communities Foundation of Texas, Moody Foundation, Dallas Foundation, Vistra Energy, Frost Bank and Matthews Southwest. With this backing, the DFW Urban League is positioned to achieve affiliate status in 2025.
